Lady Lions Drop Final 2011 Home Match

HAMMOND – Texas State out hit the Lady Lions in two sets as the Bobcats swept a Southland Conference volleyball match Saturday at Southeastern.

The Bobcats had four players with double-digit attacks record a .333 hitting percentage or better. Texas State claimed the victory 25-10, 25-20, 25-13.

Southeastern (5-26, 1-13 Southland) was led by Courtney Donald, Kinsey Williams and Lindsey Young. Donald recorded seven kills and a .238 hitting percentage. Williams tallied six kills for the Lady Lions while Young chipped in three kills and six digs to go with her 18 assists.

Megan McMillin led the Lady Lions with nine digs in the match. Senior Arianne Cruckshank added six digs for Southeastern.

Kills by Young, Tamra Grayson and Donald pushed the Lady Lions to an early 3-1 lead in the first set. The Bobcats responded with six unanswered points to take the lead, 7-3. Southeastern cut the lead in half, but Texas State went on an 18-5 run to close out the set.

In the second set, Southeastern called a timeout after the Bobcats took an 8-2 lead. The Lady Lions started chipping away at the lead and closed within 13-12, with the help of kills by Grayson, Williams and Elizabeth Ramee, but Southeastern never managed to take the lead. Williams recorded five of her six kills in the second set.

Southeastern hitters struggled in the third set as the Bobcats built an 11-4 lead. Texas State fended off the Lady Lion attack for the remainder of the set for the sweep.

Texas State (22-7, 13-1 Southland) was led by the efficient hitting of Amber Calhoun, Ashlee Hilbun and Melissa Toth. Calhoun (.900 hitting percentage) finished with nine kills, Hilbun (.600 hitting percentage) with eight and Toth with seven for the Bobcats.

Southeastern will finish out the 2011 season with a pair of Southland Conference road contests at Northwestern State (Nov. 10) and Central Arkansas (Nov. 12).
