Southeastern Faces Lumberjacks In Final Road Game Of Season

Wells looks to set NCAA single-season record in kickoff returns

Game Notes

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team heads out on the road for the final time in the 2011 season on Saturday when it faces Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin at Homer Bryce Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. Live video and live statistics, courtesy of SFA Athletics, is also available at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (2-7, 0-5 Southland) opens a busy week with two games in five days. After facing SFA (4-5, 3-2 Southland), the Lions will conclude the regular-season on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a regionally-televised contest against arch-rival Nicholls State in the annual River Bell Classic.

The Lions dropped a 38-9 decision to No. 4-ranked Sam Houston State in its last contest and enter the game against SFA ranked eighth among schools in the Football Championship Subdivision in passing offense (307.1 yards per game).

Brian Young, who is second in the Southland Conference in passing yards, has completed 191 of 343 passes for 2,449 yards and 12 TDs on the season with Brandon Collins (53 receptions, 700 yards), Simmie Yarborough (49-655) and Kory Theodore (46-613) ranking 3-4-5 in the Southland Conference in receptions. Yarborough, who caught nine passes against SHSU to become the Southland Conference's all-time leader in receptions, has caught 30 TD passes in his career and is three TDs shy of passing former Texas State receiver Cameron Luke for the Southland Conference record.

Sam Fairley (396 yards, 3 TDs) leads Southeastern on the ground while Ricky Irvin and Tay Alford pace the Lions with 73 tackles each.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Wells – who was named last week to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List – has returned 49 kickoffs for a national-best 1,311 yards. Wells, who has set Southeastern and Southland Conference single-season records, is 100 yards shy of the NCAA FCS single-season record for kickoff returns set by David Primus of Samford in 1989.

After posting a 9-3 record in 2010, SFA opened the season with an 82-6 win over Division III McMurry before dropping its next five games. The Lumberjacks have won their last three games that began with a 57-21 win at Nicholls State before wins against McNeese State and Lamar.

Brady Attaway directs the Southland Conference's top-ranked offense with 2,607 yards passing and 22 touchdowns. Gralyn Crawford (59-626) and Cordell Roberson (58-711) are the top two receivers in the Southland Conference with Jeremy Barnes leading the team with 422 yards rushing.

Ryan Epperson paces SFA on defense with 94 tackles with Jordan Aubrey (79 tackles) and former Parkview Baptist product Devin Ducote (74 tackles) next.
