Southeastern Splits Pair on Day Two of Jaguar Classic

Lady Lions defeat Alabama A&M, fall to UNC-Asheville

MOBILE, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team posted a 1-1 record on day two of the Jaguar Classic Friday at the Jag Gym on the University of South Alabama campus.

Southeastern (4-3) opened the day with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 loss to UNC-Asheville (2-2). Senior Allison Jones led the Lady Lions with seven kills in the day's opening match.

In the nightcap, the Lady Lions battled back from a set down to earn a 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-8 win over Alabama A&M. Junior Paige Dollison posted a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs for the Lady Lions. Junior Chelsea Barr added a match-high 16 digs.

Sophomore Courtney Donald led the Lady Lions with 13 kills, while Jones and freshman Stephanie Mueller contributed 11 kills apiece. Barr paced the squad with 30 digs, while sophomore Taylor Buckner (15), senior Alex Greer (11) and freshman Cherish Krohn (11) also posted double-digit digs. Junior Arianne Cruckshank finished with a match-high 51 assists.

Southeastern will close tournament play on Saturday, facing Alabama State at 1 p.m.

Match One – UNC-Asheville def. Southeastern Louisiana, 25-20, 25-20, 25-19
In the opening set, UNC-Asheville posted an impressive .295 hitting percentage to grab the early lead. A kill by Jones and an attack error by UNC-Asheville's Alex Stewart pulled Southeastern within one, 19-18. However, a kill by Meredith Foster capped a 7-1 set-ending rally to put the Lady Lions in an early hole.

UNC-Asheville pulled away late in the second set to take a 2-0 advantage. Southeastern fell behind early, 8-3, but battled back to tie the set twice. A kill by Jones knotted the score at 20, but kills by Foster and Cindi Miller fueled a 5-0 run to close out the set for UNC-Asheville.

UNC-Asheville hit .333 in the final set to close out the match, scoring five straight points to hold an early 15-9 edge. The lead would grow to as many as 11 in the final set and UNC-Asheville closed out the sweep.

Match Two – Southeastern Louisiana def. Alabama A&M 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-8
The Lady Lions hit a solid .216 in the opening set to take a 1-0 lead. A Cruckshank kill gave Southeastern a 9-4 lead early in the set and Southeastern led throughout. A service ace by Dollison and kill by Jones closed out the opening set for the Lady Lions.

Alabama A&M held Southeastern to sub-.100 hitting percentages in sets two and three to put the Lady Lions on the brink of defeat. Southeastern battled back to hit .268 in the fourth set to even the match. A kill by Alabama A&M's Clarissa Moore cut the score to 19-18, but Dollison and Mueller had three kills apiece as the Lady Lions closed the set with a 6-1 run.

Southeastern was even more efficient in the deciding fifth set, as the Lady Lions posted a .400 hitting percentage. Jones had three kills, while Dollison and Donald chipped with two kills each in the final set, as Southeastern closed the match with a 15-8 victory.
