Lions Travel To Face No. 15 LSU In Final Midweek Contest

Southeastern returns home to face Sam Houston State beginning Friday

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team will plays its final midweek game of the season on Tuesday when it travels to Baton Rouge to face No. 15-ranked and defending national champion LSU in a 6:30 p.m. contest at Alex Box Stadium.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. The game will also be televised live on Cox Sports Television (Dish Network Channel 421 on the Northshore).

Southeastern (33-13), which has won four of its last five games, rallied to win its final two games last weekend against in-state rival Nicholls, defeating the Colonels in Hammond, 9-4, before claiming a 14-5 victory in Thibodaux on Sunday.

The Lions have six regulars in the lineup hitting above .300 led by Jeff Harkensee (.330-5-35). The Southland Conference leader in doubles (21), Harkensee has a team-high 20 multiple-hit games this season, is second on the team in home runs and third in RBI.

Justin Boudreaux, a former Dutchtown High product, is next in hitting for the Lions at .326 and leads the team with 10 home runs and is tied for the Southland Conference lead with 53 RBI. Cody Gougler (.321-4-33), Chris Ernest (.316-0-11), freshman Brock Hebert (.308-2-46) and Cass Hargis (.307-0-33) follow for the Lions, who are hitting .293 as a team and lead the Southland Conference in on-base percentage (.407), runs scored (362) and hit by pitch (88).

Baton Rouge native Josh Janway (3-0, 2.08 ERA), a former Parkview Baptist product, will start on the mound for the second time this season for the Lions. The right-hander, who is second on the team with five saves, has fanned 37 batters in 39.0 innings of action this season with nine walks.

LSU (32-13) is ranked No. 15 in USA Today/ESPN; No. 17 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and No. 24 by Baseball America. Southeastern, which was ranked for eight weeks in four polls, are receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN and NCBWA Polls.

The Tigers have dropped seven consecutive games, including SEC series sweeps at Ole Miss and Florida in the last two weekends. LSU, which plays its final midweek game at home before entertaining Vanderbilt in a three-game series, is hitting .320 as a team, led by Micah Gibbs' .406 average.

Mikie Mahtook, who has hit safely in his last 13 games, is hitting .370 for the Tigers with 11 home runs and 39 RBI followed by Leon Landry (.347-4-38), Blake Dean (.323-8-54) and Austin Nola (.317-3-37). Trey Watkins (.315-2-12), Tyler Hanover (.310-1-24) and Matt Gaudet (.300-14-49) are among a group of eight regulars hitting .300 or above for LSU.

LSU will send right-hander Austin Ross (3-4, 5.54 ERA) to the mound against Southeastern.

After concluding its midweek schedule, Southeastern will return home to host Southland Conference rival Sam Houston State in a three-game series beginning Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. with Saturday's game at 2 and Sunday's finale at 1.
