Katie Duhe had two hits and senior
Chelsea Takacs homered, but a seven-run Texas State fourth inning was too much for the Lady Lions to overcome in a 10-1 loss in Southland Conference softball action Sunday afternoon at North Oak Park.
The Lady Lions (5-18, 1-9 Southland) dropped its eighth straight game. Texas State improved to 17-13 overall and 12-3 in league play.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Southeastern sophomore
Katelyn Thomason (3-6). Kristina Tello led off the inning with a double into the left centerfield gap. The Bobcat centerfielder would later score on a throwing error by Lady Lion sophomore catcher
Meghan Gomez.
Texas State added to their lead in the second inning. McKenzie Baack led off the inning with a home run just over the glove of leaping sophomore
Jordan Logan to put Texas State up, 2-0.
Southeastern mounted a threat against Texas State starter Chandler Hall (12-6) in its half of the second. Thomason struck out to open the inning, but reached when strike three rolled to the backstop. A one-out single by
Katie Duhe and a walk issued to freshman
Kati Morse to load the bases with one out. Hall battled back to retire Takacs and senior
Amber Freeman to keep the Lady Lions off the board.
Texas State added another run in the third. Tello singled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI single by Haley Lemons.
Any chance of a Southeastern comeback was ended by a fourth inning that saw Texas State send 13 batters to the plate. Leah Boatright chased Thomason with a leadoff home run over the left field fence. Freshman
Elise Kittrell replaced Thomason and allowed six runs on five hits and four walks to allow the Bobcats to push the lead to 10-0.
The Lady Lions avoided the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning. Takacs led off the inning with her first home run of the season to put Southeastern on the board.
Katie Duhe also had a two-out single, but was stranded when Hall retired Morse to end the contest.
Southeastern will close out its five-game home stand on Tuesday, hosting South Alabama at 6 p.m. at North Oak Park.
