MOBILE, Ala. – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore
Meghan Gomez was 2-for-2 with a run scored, but South Alabama pitcher Beth Pilgrim struck out 13 and held the Lady Lions to three hits, leading the Lady Jaguars to a 5-1 win in non-conference softball action Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
The Lady Lions fell to 5-11 overall with the loss. South Alabama collected 10 hits and improved to 10-9 on the season.
Southeastern freshman
Kati Morse (0-3) took the loss, striking out seven in 4.2 innings of work. Sophomore
Katelyn Thomason pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Lady Lions.
Morse and Pilgrim were mired in a scoreless pitcher's duel until the Lady Jaguars broke through in the bottom of the third. Brittany Fowler led off the inning with a solo home run to put USA on the board. Later in the inning, Kelsey Volz reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Honore to put USA up, 2-0.
The Lady Lions cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth inning. Gomez ripped a one-out double and scored when senior
Amber Freeman reached on an error.
South Alabama was able to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Marissa Boyd, Courtney Chigaros and Kamee Vessey all knocked in runs to push the USA advantage to 5-1.
Southeastern threatened one last time in the top of the seventh inning. Singles by Gomez and Freeman put runners at first and second, but Pilgrim struck out freshman
Kelsey Nichols to close the game.
The Lady Lions will be back in action on Tuesday, heading to Itta Bena, Miss. for a 3 p.m. non-conference contest versus Mississippi Valley State.
