HAMMOND – Junior right-hander
Brandon Efferson pitched seven scoreless innings, scattering four hits and fanning two batters, as No. 26 Southeastern Louisiana blanked UTSA, 2-0, in a Southland Conference game Saturday afternoon at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Josh Janway pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits and fanning three in earning his fourth save of the season, as Southeastern (No. 26 Collegiate Baseball) improved to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in the Southland Conference.
“That was a very good outing by our pitchers today,” Southeastern head coach
Jay Artigues said. “Brandon did a good job of keeping a very good hitting team in UTSA off-balance and Josh came in was able to finish it out. It was a good outing by both pitching staffs. Their pitchers threw very well against us, but we were able to get the timely hits that got us the runs we needed.”
Southeastern and UTSA (7-6, 0-2 SLC) will conclude its series on Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest. Right-hander
Tanner Lorenz (1-0, 0.64 ERA) will start on the mound for Southeastern with UTSA countering with southpaw D.D. Towler (1-1, 3.46 ERA).
Efferson (4-0), a former Zachary High product, lowered his ERA to 2.10 on the season as he held the UTSA offense in check. Efferson, who allowed two bases runners in the first inning before getting Matthew James to pop out to second, retired the side in order twice during his stint before Janway retired the Roadrunners in order in the ninth.
Cody Gougler gave Southeastern all the offense it would need in the fourth inning when his two-out double to left-center field off UTSA starter Matt Crocker (2-1) scored
Justin Boudreaux.
Boudreaux, who went 2-for-4 to lead a six-hit attack, led off the inning with a single through the left side before moving to second on a grounder by
Jeff Harkensee.
Josh Cryer followed with a single through the left side, but was eventually thrown out trying to steal second.
The Lions added their final run in the fifth inning after
Chris Franklin led off the frame when he was hit by a pitch. Franklin moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Philip Freeman and third on a grounder by Brock Hebert before
Cass Hargis drew a walk to put runners on the corners.
Boudreaux, who began Southeastern's rally on Friday, then lifted a fly ball to left that fell in front of James that allowed Franklin to score for a 2-0 lead.
Casey Selsor went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk to lead UTSA. Jake Wood also went 1-for-3 with a walk before leading off the fourth inning with a single. Crocker scattered six hits and fanned four in six innings of work for the Roadrunners before Mike Pierce pitched two innings of no-hit ball with a strikeout.
