Second Half Rally Falls Short In 68-57 Loss To Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
Kevin Palmer scored a game-high 26 points and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi withstood a furious second-half rally by Southeastern Louisiana to record a 68-57 victory Wednesday at the American Bank Center.

Demond Watt scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for TAMU-CC (14-13, 8-5 SLC), which snapped a three-game losing streak. The Islanders led 40-18 at halftime and 46-21 with 17:44 remaining in the game before Southeastern (15-11, 7-6 SLC) went on a 27-6 run capped by a free throw by Rodney Jones to close to within 52-48 with 7:17 remaining.

Patrick Sullivan hit two free throws with 2:58 left that cut the lead to 57-53, but Palmer scored on a jumper and Horace Bond added two free throws to push the lead back to 61-53 with 1:43 left.

The Islanders scored the game's first seven points and opened the game with a 28-9 run as Palmer capped the spurt with back-to-back 3-pointers. Palmer, who finished 8-for-11 in the game, scored 15 points on 5-for-5 shooting in the first half as TAMU-CC shot 15-for-30 (50 percent) and held the Lions to 6-for-17 (35.3 percent).

Palmer gave the Islanders their biggest lead in the first half when his three-point play put TAMU-CC ahead, 35-12, with 5:30 left in the first half.

Jones led Southeastern with 15 points while Sullivan added 11 points and eight rebounds. David Ndoumba came off the bench to add 10 points for Southeastern, which outscored the Islanders, 39-28, in the second half.

Southeastern will return to action on Saturday when it faces Central Arkansas in its final regular-season road game. Tipoff is scheduled at 4 p.m. at the Farris Center.
