Box Score
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana junior
Katie Duhe was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, but Tennessee-Martin plated runs in each of the first four innings to take an 8-3 win over the Lady Lions in the final day of the Lion Softball Classic Sunday morning at North Oak Park.
Sophomore
Jordan Logan also had two hits for the Lady Lions (3-5). Tennessee-Martin took the Lion Classic title after finishing 5-0 for the weekend.
In Sunday's other tournament games, St. Louis defeated Mississippi Valley State, 8-0, in six innings. Jackson State also was victorious, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 win over Grambling.
Tennessee-Martin took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring an unearned run off Southeastern sophomore
Katelyn Thomason (2-2). Kalah Mathis reached on a two-base error by Southeastern sophomore third baseman
Casey Simpson and scored on a RBI groundout by Jenny Bain.
The Lady Lions took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Logan opened the game with a bunt single and scored on a one-out single by Duhe. Mathis mishandled Duhe's hit in right, allowing the Lutcher native to advance all the way to third.
A two-out walk drawn by senior
Chelsea Takacs put runners at the corners. Thomason hit a grounder to short, but Jordan Garrett dropped the force as second, allowing Duhe to score and put Southeastern on top, 2-1.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as UTM scored four runs in the top of the second inning. Megan Van Arsdale led off the inning with a single. The hit ended a streak for Thomason, who threw the third no-hitter in school history in Friday's 4-0 win over Mississippi Valley State, that saw her pitch 12 consecutive innings without a hit.
After Thomason issued a one-out walk, Laurie Lindow gave the Skyhawks the lead for good with a three-run home run to put UTM up, 4-2. An RBI infield single by Chelsea Cary put UTM up, 5-2.
UTM added a run in the third and two runs in the fourth inning to push the lead to 8-2. Junior
Bailey Zievert held the Skyhawks scoreless for the final three innings and scattered three hits in the final five innings in an impressive relief performance.
The Lady Lions cut into the lead in the fifth inning. Duhe reached on a one-out single and scored on an RBI double by Takacs. UTM pitcher Kate Vanderham held Southeastern to one hit in the final 2.1 innings after Takacs' double to preserve the victory.
Southeastern will be back in action on Wednesday, facing nationally-ranked LSU at 6 p.m. at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge.
