Box Score
BATON ROUGE – Southeastern Louisiana senior
Amber Freeman doubled home the go-ahead runs in the top of the fourth inning and sophomore
Katelyn Thomason pitched four innings of no-hit relief to lead the Lady Lions to a 3-2 win over Southern Wednesday afternoon at Lady Jaguar Field.
Southeastern improved to 1-2 on the year. Southern fell to 0-2 on the season.
“We played much better today,” Southeastern head coach
Pete Langlois commented. “With two of our top hitters (junior
Katie Duhe and senior
Chelsea Takacs) out sick it was important to have others step up. Amber,
Jordan Logan,
Heather Grivas and
Katelyn Thomason all stepped up big today.”
Southern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kesha Tauriac and Aruba Nicholas had consecutive run scoring singles off Lady Lion freshman
Kati Morse to give the Lady Jaguars the early lead.
Morse helped get one run back, singling home sophomore
Lauren Coniglio to cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning.
Southern's offense was stifled after its first inning production. Freshman
Elise Kittrell struck out two in 1.2 innings of relief. Thomason (1-1) then shut the door, striking out six in four innings of shutout work.
With freshman
Kelsey Nichols and Grivas sitting on second and third with two outs in the fourth, Freeman gave Southeastern the lead for good. Her double plated two runs and put Southeastern up, 3-2.
The Lady Lions will be back in action on Friday, opening play at the Lion Classic at North Oak Park. Southeastern will play Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. and Jackson State at 5:30 p.m. on the opening day.
