HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to action after a one-week break in completing final exams as it travels Saturday to face in-state rival Southern University at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
Southeastern (4-2), in the midst of a seven-game roadtrip, last played on Dec. 4 at UCF as it fell to the unbeaten Knights, 74-49. The Lions, who posted season-lows in points, field goals (18) and field goal percentage (.295), will continue play on Wednesday at Alabama and at Vanderbilt (Dec. 18) before breaking for the Christmas holiday.
Trent Hutchin, the third-leading scorer in the Southland Conference, leads Southeastern at 19.5 points per game while leading the league in free throw percentage (.947) and 3-pointers made per game (3.5). The former Woodlawn High product is ranked among the Southland leaders in field goal percentage (.534) and is fourth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage making 50 percent (21-for-42) of his attempts.
Sophomore
Roosevelt Johnson is next in scoring for the Lions at 11.2 points per game while
Brandon Fortenberry (9.8),
Gary Dixon (9.4),
David Ndoumba (8.7) and
Rodney Jones (7.7) are next. Ndoumba, who is tied for third in the Southland Conference in blocked shots (1.3), leads Southeastern and is sixth in the league with 7.5 rebounds per game.
Southern (1-7) has dropped its last five games after posting a 74-72 victory over Auburn-Montgomery on Nov. 17. The Jaguars have dropped games to Tougaloo, Wright State, Richmond, Oakland and Charleston Southern in their recent stretch.
Julius Ingram leads Southern in scoring at 12.0 points per game with Blake Sanford following at 10.8. Quinton Doggett, third on the team in scoring at 8.7 points per game, leads the Jaguars with 6.7 rebounds per contest while Brandon White averages 5.0 points and 3.0 assists per game.
Southeastern trails the all-time series, 16-15, but has won the last five meetings in the series that dates back to the 1974-75 season. The Lions claimed a 94-48 victory in last year's meeting in the University Center - the largest margin of victory for Southeastern in the series, besting a 70-49 win on Feb. 6, 1982.
