Lumberjacks Grind Out 62-51 Win Over Southeastern

Lions drop third straight, host UCA on Wednesday

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin's Walt Harris scored 18 points to lead two players in double figures and the Lumberjacks benefitted from a huge advantage on the glass as they pulled away and defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 62-51, in a Southland Conference game Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

Jereal Scott added 10 points for SFA (13-5, 3-2 Southland), which moved into sole possession of first place in the East Division and held a 36-19 advantage on the boards. Southeastern, which dropped its third straight game, fell to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in the Southland.

Jordan Glynn added six points and a team-high 12 rebounds for SFA, which grabbed 17 offensive rebounds in leading to an 18-2 advantage in second-chance points. The Lumberjacks pulled away from a 45-43 lead after a basket by Patrick Sullivan with 12:15 remaining, extending their lead to 56-45 on a basket by Scott with 6:30 remaining.

Southeastern closed to within 58-49 on a driving layup by Deshawn Patterson with 4:38 remaining, but SFA sealed the game after grabbing two offensive rebounds which led to an Eric Bell layup with 3:22 remaining.

In the first half, Harris scored eight of the Lumberjacks' first 13 points as SFA eventually opened up with a 21-11 lead on a jumper by Scott.

Southeastern chipped away at the lead as Sullivan scored two straight baskets and Trent Hutchin drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner with 5:12 remaining. After SFA pushed the lead back to 29-20 on a 3-pointer by Denzel Barnes, Southeastern closed out the half scoring the last eight points, capped by a steal and layup by Rodney Jones at the buzzer.

Sullivan led Southeastern with 20 points and six rebounds while Jones added 10 points for the Lions, who shot 21-for-41 from the floor and 6-for-13 from behind the 3-point line.

SFA finished 27-for-61 from the floor and went 6-for-16 from behind the 3-point line as it improved to 9-1 at home and won its sixth straight over the Lions.

Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it returns home to face Central Arkansas in a 7 p.m. contest.
