HAMMOND - The Lions struck first in the second game of a three-game series with Southland Conference rival Lamar.  However, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (16-9, 7-4 SLC) could not hang on against the Cardinals in a 10-1 loss on Saturday.  The Lions will try to take the rubber match of the three-game set when they return to action Sunday at 1 p.m.

Southeastern got out to an early lead against Cardinal starter, and SLC ERA leader Eric Harrington in the first inning.  Senior second baseman Ty Summerlin drilled a double down the left field line with one out to get things started, and, two batters later, sophomore catcher Josh Cryer drove home the games first run with a sharp single to center.

Sophomore right hander Brandon Efferson, who started for the Lions, also got off to a strong start.  Efferson held the Cardinal lineup scoreless through the first three frames.  The Zachary native extended his scoreless innings streak, dating back to his last start at Central Arkansas on March 22, to 9.2 innings before allowing a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth.

However, Lamar went on to add four more off the Zachary native before he left the ballgame.  Efferson went 6.0 innings and allowed five runs on six hits while walking three and striking out eight.

Unfortunately, for Southeastern, Harrington recovered and showed the form that led him to a 3-0 record and an SLC best 0.95 ERA entering the ballgame.  The Lions managed just three more hits off Lamar's ace and could not cross the plate again.

Lamar took the lead with a run in the fifth, then added two more in the sixth.  Six more runs over the final three frames, including a four-run seventh, gave Lamar the 10-1 margin of vicotory.

First pitch is for the rubber match of the three game series between Southeastern and Lamar is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
