Lions Face Stern Midweek Challenge Against MVSU, Southern

SWAC foes enter Alumni Field on a roll

The Lions will look to build some momentum heading into the SLC season opener
Game Notes: March 3, 2009

HAMMOND -
After taking the rubber match of a high-scoring weekend series against the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Sunday, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (4-3) will not get a break in its final tuneup prior to the start of the 2009 Southland Conference season.  The Lions will play host to the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (2-2) on Tuesday night before hosting the Southern University Jaguars (3-3) on Wednesday.

The Delta Devils are up first for the Lions.  Mississippi Valley State is sure to present a stern challenge to the Lions on Tuesday night.  The Delta Devils already own a win over a Southland Conference foe, having defeated Stephen F. Austin 4-3 and Northwestern State 12-5 on Feb. 21 at UL-Monroe's Tournament.  MVSU will enter Tuesday's contest looking to get back on the winning track after losing to Mississippi State, currently ranked No. 26 in the nation, by a final of 4-3 on Feb. 25.

Meanwhile Southern boasts its own set of impressive performances.  The Jaguars picked up an early season 4-2 win against San Diego State on Feb. 21; and Southern played well early on Feb. 25 in an 11-5 loss to LSU, currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by National College Baseball Writers Association of America.

However, the Lion appear up to the task, coming off a successful week that included a hard-fought 9-7 win over UL-Lafayette on Feb. 25 before taking two-of-three in a high scoring series with the Sacred Heart Pioneers over the weekend.

The Lions earned their first win at ULL since 1987 and posted their largest margin of victory in six years when they defeated the Pioneers 22-4 in the rubber match of the three game set.

First pitch for Tuesday's contest with the Delta Devils, as well as Wednesday's tilt with Southern, is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Live stats and streaming audio for Tuesday's game with MVSU will be available online at www.LionSports.net.  The game will be broadcast on KSLU 90.9 FM in Hammond.  Live stats for Wednesday's game versus Southern will be available online at www.LionSports.net.

After a day off on Thursday, Southeastern will open the 2009 Southland Conference season when they visit the defending regular season champion Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners for a three-game set opening this Friday.
