NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University basketball team returns to action on Saturday when it faces Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin in a 6 p.m. contest at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
Southeastern (9-15, 3-8 SLC) look to halt a season-long five-game losing streak – its longest in three years – while looking to get back into contention for its sixth straight postseason berth. During its five-game skid, the Lions have lost games by 3, 2, 5, 2 and 4 points.
In its last game against UT Arlington, the Lions trailed by nine early did not gain the lead as the Mavericks held off each Southeastern rally.
Patrick Sullivan, the team's leading scorer (12.0) and rebounder (6.8), scored 20 points to lead Southeastern with
Brandon Fortenberry adding 14.
Damon Forest chipped in with 13 points off the bench for the Lions while
Warrell Span added 11.
Span is Southeastern's other player averaging in double figures (10.2) and is followed in scoring by
Chris Cyprian (9.2), Forest (8.4), Fortenberry (7.7) and
Robert Tibbs (6.3).
SFA (16-7, 8-3 SLC), tied with Nicholls State for the SLC East Division lead, dropped a 59-56 decision at McNeese State last week despite 22 points from Matt Kingsley. The Lumberjacks have been perfect at home, winning all 10 games this season and 11 straight dating back to last season.
Kingsley leads SFA in scoring (15.3) and rebounds (7.2) with Shreveport's Josh Alexander (14.1) next in scoring. Eddie Williams (8.3), Nick Shaw (6.2) and Eric Bell (3.9) round out the starting lineup for the Lumberjacks, who average 67.2 points per game while allowing 56.8.
After facing SFA, Southeastern returns home for its final two games beginning Wednesday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Lions will close out their home schedule on Feb. 28 against Central Arkansas.
