Lions Visit Nicholls State In Crucial Southland Clash

Southeastern looks to snap three-game losing streak

Brandon Fortenberry has averaged 10 points and seven assists in his last two games
HAMMOND – Looking to snap a three-game losing streak and remain in contention for a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament, the Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to action Saturday when it faces Nicholls State in a 3 p.m. contest at Stopher Gym.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Having dropped its last three games by a combined total of 10 points, Southeastern (9-13, 3-6 SLC) returns to action for the first time in a week and looks to move up in the league standings where it is tied for third in the SLC East Division and tied for seventh overall with Lamar and McNeese State. The Lions fell to UTSA last week at home, 66-61, despite a season-high 22 points from Damon Forest.

Patrick Sullivan is Southeastern's top scorer at 11.5 points per game followed by Warrell Span (10.3) and Chris Cyprian (9.6). Cyprian, who missed last week's game against UTSA, paces the Lions in SLC games at 11.5 points per game.

Forest, who has scored in double figures in his last four games, is averaging 7.6 points on the season while Brandon Fortenberry (7.3) and Robert Tibbs (7.0) are next.

Nicholls State (14-9, 7-3 SLC), which has won six of its last seven games, held on to defeat the Lions, 68-65, on Jan. 31 in the University Center. The Colonels rebounded from a one-point loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to claim a 60-59 victory at Sam Houston State on Wednesday on Justin Payne's bucket at the buzzer.

Ryan Bathie leads the Colonels in scoring at 15.2 points per game followed by Anatoly Bose (13.7), freshman Fred Hunter (12.0) and Payne (6.7). The Colonels have won eight of 10 games at home this season and hold opponents to 59.1 points per game on the season.

After facing Nicholls State, Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it plays host to UT Arlington in a 7 p.m. contest at the University Center.
