Strong Effort Carries Lions Past Millsaps College, 81-49

Southeastern Louisiana's Damon Forest scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the first half and the Lions held Millsaps College scoreless for the final 7:07 in an 81-49 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at the University Center.

Patrick Sullivan added 17 points and nine rebounds for Southeastern (4-1) while Robert Tibbs recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Gary Dixon added 12 points for Southeastern, all from behind the 3-point line, as the Lions built a 45-19 halftime lead and outscored Millsaps (1-3) 15-0 down the stretch.

Tibbs, who went 1-for-2 from the floor and 11-for-12 from the free throw line, fueled a 13-0 run in the first half that turned an 11-9 deficit into a 22-11 lead. The 6-foot-6 senior tied the game with a pair of free throws at the 14:09 mark before Forest scored five consecutive points, including a three-point play for a 16-11 lead.

The Lions, who shot 49 percent (28-for-57) from the floor and forced 24 turnovers, increased their lead to 34-13 when Sullivan dunked his own miss. Southeastern closed out the first half with an 11-2 run as Forest scored five points in the run.

Millsaps, which was led by Mandeville native Blake Martinez with 19 points, got as close as 57-43 in the second half on a tip-in by Jeff Brown with 9:29 remaining. Millsaps closed to within 66-49 on a 3-pointer by Martinez with 7:07 left, but the Majors went 0-for-7 from the floor with two turnovers down the stretch.

Former Walker High product Cameron Varnado added 12 points for the Majors, who shot 35 percent from the floor and were 6-for-17 (35 percent) from behind the 3-point line.

Southeastern will return to action on Tuesday when it plays host to Spring Hill College in a 5:30 p.m. contest. The game will be the first of a doubleheader with the Southeastern women's team, which plays host to UNO at 7:45.
