HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to Southland Conference action on Wednesday when it travels to face Central Arkansas in a 7 p.m. contest at the Farris Center.
The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
After suffering its first loss of the season at home in last Saturday's 60-49 setback to Stephen F. Austin, Southeastern (8-10, 2-3 SLC) looks to do what it has done once in 10 games this season – win on the road. The Lions have dropped their last six decisions away from the University Center, including SLC contests at Lamar and Sam Houston State.
Against SFA, the SLC East Division leader, Southeastern was held to its lowest scoring output in 34 games dating back to last season while tying a University Center record for fewest field goals in a game (16). The Lions, who held SFA to 41 percent from the floor, were led by
Warrell Span with 14 points and
Patrick Sullivan with 13.
Sullivan, who ranks fifth in the Southland Conference in rebounds and second in blocked shots, is Southeastern's top scorer at 11.6 points per game with Span next at 10.9.
Chris Cyprian (9.3),
Brandon Fortenberry (7.3) and
Robert Tibbs (6.5) follow in the scoring column for Southeastern.
As a team, Southeastern is averaging 73.1 points per game and are second in the SLC in field goal percentage (.473) and third in field goal defense (.416).
UCA (9-9, 2-3 SLC) split in a pair of SLC road games last week losing at Nicholls State before edging McNeese State, 58-54, last Saturday. Brooks Taylor scored 18 points to lead the Bears to their first road win of the season while Brian Marks grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Bears, who are 7-3 at home, are led in scoring by Marcus Pillow at 12.0 points per game followed by Mitch Rueter (11.3), Taylor (10.1) and Mike Pouncy (10.1).
Southeastern leads the series, that began in 2006-07, 3-1. The schools split last season's series with each team winning on its home floor.
After facing UCA, Southeastern will return home to battle in-state rival Nicholls State on Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest.
