Southeastern Back On The Road Facing Bearkats in SLC Play

Lions look to build on biggest win against an SLC school

Brandon Fortenberry is third in the Southland Conference in assists
HAMMOND – After posting its biggest victory of a Southland Conference school since becoming a member in 1997-98, the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team returns to the road as it travels west to face Sam Houston State in a 7 p.m. contest at Johnson Coliseum.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (7-8, 1-1 SLC) snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday with an 84-59 victory over in-state rival Northwestern State – the largest margin of victory in school history over the Demons and surpassing a 21-point win over Stephen F. Austin in the 2004-05 campaign.

Playing its first game without departed starter and leading scorer Kevyn Green, whose eligibility officially expired last week, the Lions shot a season-high 63 percent from the floor while holding Northwestern State to 31.7 percent – the lowest by an opponent this season. Patrick Sullivan and Chris Cyprian scored 19 points each to lead Southeastern while freshman Brandon Fortenberry added a season-high 16.

Sullivan, who is second in the SLC in field goal percentage and blocked shots, is the top scorer for Southeastern averaging 12.3 points with a team-high 7.2 rebounds. Warrell Span is next in scoring for the Lions at 11.3 points with Cyprian (8.9), Fortenberry (7.5) and Robert Tibbs (7.1) next.

Southeastern enters the game tied with Nicholls State as the top field goal shooting team in the SLC at 48.6 percent on the season and average 76.9 points per game. Defensively, the Lions are fourth in the league in field goal defense (.422) and are fifth in rebounding margin (+4.1).

Sam Houston State (6-8, 0-1 SLC) returns to action after a narrow 75-73 loss at Stephen F. Austin last week. The Bearkats have dropped three of their last four games that included contests at Texas A&M and Central Florida.

Newcomer Corey Allmond leads SHSU in scoring at 13.5 points per game with New Orleans' Ashton Mitchell next at 11.9. Transfer Preston Brown is the Bearkats' other player in double figures at 10.1 points while DeLuis Ramirez paces the team with 6.9 rebounds.

SHSU has won three of the last four meetings between the schools, with Southeastern claiming a 61-58 victory last season in Huntsville. The Lions, who trail in the all-time series 18-14, have won four of the last seven meetings in Huntsville.

After facing SHSU, the Lions will return home for their next two games beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m. against McNeese State in “Jam the Jungle” Night. Southeastern will close out its home stand on Jan. 24 when it battles SFA in a battle between the SLC East Division rivals.
