SOUTHEASTERN FALLS TO NICHOLLS IN SLC OPENER

Errors Prove Costly in Loss to Colonels

Box Score

HAMMOND - Junior right side hitter Lauren Mayer and sophomore outside hitter Kalynn Evans each posted double-doubles for the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (4-5, 0-1 Southland Conference) on Friday night, but it wasn't enough to overcome a hot-hitting Nicholls State (3-7, 0-1 SLC) offense as the Lady Colonels handed Southeastern a 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 18-25, 18-25) loss in the conference opener for both squads.

"Things just didn't go our way tonight," head coach Julie Langford said.  "After talking to the girls postgame, they know that we didn't play the way we were capable of playing and that we didn't have the proper focus tonight.  We just have to work harder on staying consistent.  We know we're better than we played tonight, we've seen it.  Now we just have to put it together."

Mayer led the way with 14 kills and a .189 hitting percentage to lead the offense while adding 11 digs.  Meanwhile, Evans paced the defense with 16 digs and added another ten kills to the Lady Lion cause, but it wasn't enough to overcome 44 Southeastern errors in the loss.

The Lady Lions jumped out to an early lead after a hard-fought first set that saw Southeastern battle back and forth with the Colonels before, ultimately, claiming a 27-25 win.

Unfortunately, for Southeastern, that success proved short lived as Nicholls State hung on for a 25-23 win in set two before hitting .308 as a team in the third set to win 25-18 and take a two sets to one lead.

Trying to rally to force a fifth-set tiebreaker, Southeastern jumped out to an early lead in the fourth.  But, once again, Nicholls battled back.  After tying the score at 17-17, the Colonels used a 8-1 run to pull away and claim a 25-18 victory and end the Lady Lion comeback.

Southeastern will return to action on Tuesday evening when the Lady Lions head to Shreveport to visit the Centenary Ladies.  Gametime is set for 5:30 p.m. Live stats will be available at
