Lions Set To Open Homestand; Face Millsaps Tuesday

Lions rank No. 20 among DI schools in scoring average

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team opens a two-game homestand Tuesday when it faces Millsaps College in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

Tipoff, which will follow the Southeastern women's game against Southern at 5:30 p.m., is slated for approximately 7:30. Both games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (4-4), which opens its longest homestand during the opening month of the season, looks to bounce back from a disappointing 72-58 loss at Florida Atlantic last Saturday.

The Lions, who will close out their homestand on Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest against Jackson State, trailed 32-30 at halftime before going 10-for-31 (32.3 percent) from the field in the second half while FAU shot a blistering 14-for-19 (73.7 percent).

Southeastern, ranked No. 20 nationally in scoring offense at 81.5 points per game, is led in scoring by Kevyn Green at 20.6 points, followed by Warrell Span (12.1), Patrick Sullivan (11.3), Hammond's Chris Cyprian (9.0) and sixth-man Robert Tibbs (7.9).

Green, the Southland Conference's leading scorer, is ranked 21st nationally in 3-point field goal percentage converting on 49.1 percent (27-for-55) of his attempts. The 6-foot-5 swingman, who is 60-for-113 from the field (53.1 percent) enters the game with Millsaps (2-6) is one of five players on the roster shooting 50 percent or better from the floor.

Span, a 6-6 senior from Patterson, is shooting 54 percent from the floor and is second on the team in rebounds at 6.9.

Sullivan, the Lions' 6-9 post player, looks to make his mark in the Southeastern record books as he needs two blocks to pass Thelander Tillman as the school's all-time leader. Sullivan notched his third double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds against FAU and added two blocks to increase his career total to 130.

Freshman Brandon Fortenberry, averaging 7.4 points per game, is second in the Southland Conference with 5.0 assists per game for Southeastern and leads the team with 12 steals.

Off the bench, Tibbs has been the Lions' top option with Antonio Pope (4.9), freshman DeShawn Patterson (3.4), Jeremy Dunbar (2.4) and David Ndoumba (1.1) providing quality minutes. The Lions were also bolstered by the addition of former Central product Damon Forest, who scored seven points at FAU in his Southeastern debut after transferring last season from Louisiana-Lafayette.

Millsaps, a Division III school which finished 28-4 last season in claiming the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title, lost its first four games before splitting in its last four.

The Majors are led in scoring by former Mandeville High product Blake Martinez (14.9) with former Archbishop Hannan product Chris Ingle next at 11.0. Ingle leads Millsaps with 6.1 rebounds per game while former Teurlings Catholic standout Chad Songy has averaged 4.8 assists.

Southeastern has claimed all 10 meetings between the schools since the series started in the 1961-62 season. The Lions captured last year's meeting with a 73-55 victory as Green scored a team-high 19 points while Sullivan grabbed nine rebounds.
