NATCHITOCHES - After falling behind 2-0 after the first two sets, the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (9-14, 3-9 Southland Conference) tried to mount a third set rally to stay alive. Unfortunately, a hot-hitting offense from Northwestern State (10-12, 5-7 SLC) combined to hit .301 as a unit and hand the Lady Lions a 3-0 loss (10-25, 18-25, 21-25) on Saturday.
Southeastern was led by junior middle blocker Julie Elliott, who posted five kills. Unfortunately, no other Lady Lion could manage more than three kills as the Southeastern offense struggled early on.
Meanwhile, the Demon offense came out strong. Northwestern State led by as many as 14 in the first set en route to a 25-10 win in the opening frame.
The Lady Lions tried to rebound in the second set, forcing three ties and a lead change. However, after tying the second set at 11-11, Northwestern State put together another big run, outscoring Southeastern 14-7 the rest of the way for a 25-18 second set victory.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Lady Lions tried to mount a comeback in the third. Southeastern saw its most successful set in the third, getting out to an 8-4 lead early on. The Demons battled back, but the Lady Lions maintained the lead at 21-20. Unfortunately, for Southeastern, Northwestern State managed one last run, scoring the final five unanswered points in the third for a 25-21 win.
The Lady Lions will return to action on Nov. 7 when they head to Texas A&M Coprus Christi.
