Lady Lions Embark on First Southland Road Trip

Southeastern Heads to McNeese State, Stephen F. Austin in SLC Action

HAMMOND - After a midweek non-conference win over Southern on Tuesday, the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (6-7, 1-2 Southland Conference) will return to SLC action with their first conference road trip of the 2008 season this weekend as the Lady Lions will head to McNeese State on Friday before heading to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.

"We're encouraged by where we're at right now," head coach Julie Langford said.  "We've spent the last few days looking at game film on McNeese and Stephen F. and we think we've indentified some things that we can can do to be successful against them.  I'm really interested to see how we will match up to these teams this weekend."

The Lady Lions pulled to to within one game of .500 with a 3-0 win over Southern on Tuesday despite being without sophomore libero Alex Greer and senior middle blocker Lydia Adeosun who sat out the match due to injury as well as dealing with numerous nagging injuries and illinesses.

"We had some injury issues to deal with on Tuesday," Langford said.  "But, we were very encouraged with a lot of our performances.  Our middle blockers did well playing the back for the first time this year and (junior defensive specialist) Margaret Pittman did very well filling in for Alex.  It was good to see that we were able to put an effort like that together despite being shorthanded."

Nevertheless, Langford and the Lady Lions are looking forward to improving their health as they prepare for Friday's weekend opener at McNeese State.

"We're healthier than we were earlier this week," Langford said.  "We gave the team the day off on Wednesday to try to get back to full strength and let some illnesses clear up, but we're hoping to be as healthy as possible very soon."

First serve for the Lady Lions and the McNeese State Cowgirls is set for 7 p.m. in Lake Charles, La.  Following the match, Southeastern will hit the road and head to Nacogdoches, Texas to face Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Lady Lions will return home when Sam Houston State visits the University Center for a midweek conference matchup next Tuesday night.
