HAMMOND - The Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (8-12, 3-7 Southland Conference) tried to rally from early deficits on Saturday, but despite the Lady Lions' best efforts, it was too little too late against the defending SLC Tournament Champion Texas State Bobcats (15-12, 8-1 SLC) who handed Southeastern a 3-0 loss by scores of 14-25, 16-25 and 23-25.
The Lady Lions opened the match strong against the SLC's 2007 NCAA Tournament representative by forcing seven ties and staying within two points of the Bobcats until midway through the first set. Junior right side hitter Jessica Srajer led the way on offense with a pair of kills and no errors on six attempts for a .333 hitting percentage.
The Lady Lions were within one of Texas State with a 14-13 first set score, however, the Bobcats put together the first of several big runs on the day to pull away. Texas State scored seven straight points before a kill by junior right side hitter Lauren Mayer broke up the Bobcat momentum at 21-14. Texas State tallied the next four points unanswered to claim the 25-14 win.
The Bobcats' momentum carried over into the second set as Texas State never trailed. The Lady Lions trailed by as many as 13 before trying to crawl back into the second frame. Trailing 20-7, Southeastern put together a 9-4 run thanks, in large part, to three kills from Mayer and an ace from junior defensive specialist Margaret Pittman. However, a Lady Lion error gave the Bobcats the 25-16 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Texas State opened the third set with another big run, getting out to a 11-4 lead before Southeastern started rallying. A six-one Lady Lion run pulled Southeastern to within two at 12-10 before Texas State managed a six-one run of its own to put the Lady Lions down 18-11.
However, seven straight unanswered points went Southeastern's way as the Lady Lions tied the match at 18-18. Southeastern took the lead at 20-19 and again at 21-20, however the Bobcats put together one last five-two run to claim a 25-23 win.
The Lady Lions will now take a brief break from the Southland Conference schedule when they head to Alcorn State for a Monday night match against the Braves. First serve between is set for 7 p.m.
