HAMMOND -
Junior right side hitter Lauren Mayer led the offense with 11 kills and added 12 digs, and junior setter Katie Collins posted a double-double of her own with 33 assists and a team-high 13 digs as the Southeastetrn Louisiana University women's volleyball team (7-9, 2-4 Southland Conference) rallied from a 2-1 deficit for a 3-2 win over Sam Houston State (5-9, 3-4 SLC) on Tuesday night by scores of 18-15, 27-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-10.

"This was a great win for us tonight," head coach Julie Langford said.  "I'm pleased with how our team reacted to getting down early.  We kept our intensity up and battled back and were able to come out on top."

The Lady Lions got out in front early, taking a 7-3 lead in the first set, but a 9-4 Bearkat run put Sam Houston State out in front 12-11.  Southeastern tried to rally back, closing the gap late by pulling to within three at 21-18, but Sam Houston tacked on four unanswered points to take a 25-18 win and a 1-0 lead after one.

Southeastern responed with their best defensive effort of the night in the second set.  Despite hitting just .051 (13-11-39) as a team, the Lady Lions posted a 63 percent sideout average and held Sam Houston State to a .000 hitting percentage (10-10-35) to claim a 27-25 win.

Sophomore outside hitter Kalynn Evans led the way in the second set with four kills and a .375 hitting percentage (4-1-8) as the Lady Lions held on to even the match at 1-1.

Sam Houston State responded in the third, holding Southeastern to a .022 team hitting percentage (12-11-46) while five Bearkats posted multiple kills to take a 2-1 lead with a 25-20 win.

With their backs against the wall, the Southeastern offense came out with its best performance of the night.  The Lady Lions hit .241 (12-5-29) while the Southeastern defense held Sam Houston State to a .115 mark (9-6-26).

Evans added three more kills with Mayer, Collins, junior middle blocker Julie Elliott, and freshman middle blocker Paige Dollison each posting two kills as Southeastern forced a fifth set with a 25-20 victory.

The Lady Lions jumped out to an early lead in the do-or-die set, and this time Southeastern held on.  After climbing out to an 8-3 lead early on, the Bearkats rallied to within three to make it 9-6.

However, Southeastern ended any hopes of a Sam Houston State comeback by outscoring the Bearkats 5-4 the rest of the way.  Elliott, Evans and sophomore outside hitter Allison Jones each posted a pair of kills to help Southeastern to the 15-10 win for the final 3-2 margin of victory.

The Lady Lions will return to action when they hit the road this weekend.  Southeastern will head to Lamar on Saturday for a 3 p.m. match before a four-day layoff pits the Lady Lions against the Nicholls State Colonels on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
