LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech lost the coin toss and had a penalty on its first play of the game. Those were about the only negatives the Division I-A Red Raiders had after a disappointing 12-3 loss last week at TCU
Graham Harrell completed 20 of 29 passes for 247 yards and threw four first-half touchdowns as Tech rolled to a 42-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 62-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Shannon Woods rushed for two touchdowns as the Red Raiders (3-1) scored on five of its first seven possessions and piled up 509 yards total offense, one week after recording 242 yards and prompting Tech coach Mike Leach to label his team the "worst offense in America." Southeastern (1-3), playing its third I-A opponent in its first four games, returns home to face Gardner-Webb (1-2) in a 6 p.m. contest on Saturday.
"I'm proud of the way we played hard," Southeastern assistant head coach Tony Hatmaker said. "Texas Tech is an outstanding football team, and they are going to continue to have a good season. I think we're going to have a good season.
"You have to give a lot of credit to Texas Tech. It would have been good if they had been coming off of a win against TCU - that would have been in our favor. And obviously (receiver Jarrett Hicks) becoming eligible added some incentive to the day. But our guys played hard."
Southeastern, which gained 119 yards total offense and suffered its largest margin of defeat in school history, completed 12 of 19 passes in the contest, with Bradd Schlosser going 6-for-9 passes for 41 yards. Jay Lucas, who played against Tech in Lubbock last season while at Texas A&M, led the Southeastern ground game with 70 yards on 20 carries. Duriel Adams recorded a game-high seven tackles for Southeastern with Demoris Hardiman adding six.
Southeastern won the coin toss and deferred to the second half giving Tech the ball to start the game. The Red Raiders were called for a delay of game penalty before its first snap moving the ball back to the TTU 16 before Harrell connected on a 56-yard pass to Grant Walker to the SLU 28.
Three plays later, Harrell found Todd Walker in the end zone on a 9-yard touchdown that capped a four-play, 79-yard drive and gave the Red Raiders a quick 7-0 lead. After a pair of Lion penalties moved the ball to the SLU 33, Tech needed three plays to score as Woods went over right tackle and scored from 18 yards out for a 14-0 lead.
Schlosser, a true freshman for the Lions, relieved Seth Babin after Southeastern went three-and-out on its first three possessions, moving the Lions to the Tech 34. But the Red Raider defense stiffened as Schlosser was sacked on fourth-and-2 at the TTU 34.
Harrell, who was relieved by Chris Todd to open the second half, threw touchdown passes of 5 and 7 yards to Joel Filani that gave the Red Raiders a 28-0 lead in the second quarter before Baron Batch scored on a 13-yard run and Harrell hit Hicks for a 6-yard TD pass with 2:05 remaining in the first half.
Woods added his second touchdown run of the game with a 5-yard run on the Red Raiders' first drive of the second half and Todd found L.A. Reed on a 22-yard TD pass one play after Danny Amendola returned a Southeastern punt back 51 yards for a 56-0 lead with 4:57 left in the third quarter.
Alex Trlica added field goals of 32 and 39 yards for Texas Tech, which opens Big 12 play on Saturday at Texas A&M.
