HAMMOND - For Southeastern Louisiana, a return to Strawberry Stadium for homecoming after one of the most brutal four-week stretches ever experienced by a first-year college football program was just what the doctor ordered.
Martin Hankins threw for 363 yards and a school record six touchdowns as the Lions broke a five-game losing streak on Saturday by routing Webber International, 68-10.
The Lions (3-5), who gave up a school record 87 points in losing by 60 at Northwestern State last week, rolled to a 37-3 halftime lead over the outmanned Warriors (2-4) and finished with the third-highest point total in school history.
Hankins, who already holds the Lions' single season records for passing yards (2,150) and touchdown passes (17), finished his day 32-of-50 and threw his scoring passes to five different receivers.
Southeastern wasted little time in taking control, scoring on a 9-play, 78-yard drive that consumed the game's first four minutes, culminating in a 29-yard touchdown pass from Hankins to Felton Huggins.
Webber pulled to within 7-3 on a 40-yard field goal by Daniel Stickely at the 3:19 mark of opening quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Keylam Davis took a double handoff and raced down the left sideline to a 98-yard touchdown, the second-longest scoring play in Southeastern football history.
Davis broke was his own record on a kickoff return, as he scored on a 97-yard return the previous week at Northwestern State.
Hankins put the game out of reach with three scoring passes in the second quarter, finding Marcus Thompson and Ray Perkins out of the backfield for the
first two touchdowns, and then hitting Josh Taylor in stride for a 23-yard score with 2:20 left before halftime.
Perkins, who transferred to Southeastern from Vanderbilt, notched his second 100-yard game of the season with 107 yards on nine carries. Thompson added 66 yards on six carries as Southeastern rushed for a season high 197 yards after posting a net total of 248 yards on the ground in its first seven games.
Hankins was 18-of-28 for 225 yards in the first half with four touchdowns. Hutch Gonzales led the way receiving with six catches for 76 yards as 12 different Lions caught passes.
Backup quarterback Seth Babin threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Robbie Scates as he went 4-for-4 on a fourth quarter drive to help the Lions finish with 609 total yards.
Webber International, a first-year non-scholarship NAIA program, scored its lone touchdown with 2:41 to play on a 19-yard pass from Brian Coconato to Chad Pierce.
The 68 points scored by the Lions are eclipsed only by the 75 scored against Jones County Junior College in 1932 and 71 against Troy State in 1951. The 58-point margin of victory is the fifth largest in school history.
