HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team closed out the opening week of fall camp with a two-hour practice Saturday morning in Strawberry Stadium.
SLU opened fall camp with four split-squad practices Tuesday through Friday. Saturday was the first time the full team came together for a practice and put on the full pads.
Saturday's workout was also enhanced by the presence of an officiating crew, helping to educate the Lion players and coaches on how certain things will be called this fall.
"We saw improvement throughout this first week," Southeastern head coach
Frank Scelfo said. "We were able to identify some newcomers who we think are going to really help us immediately, so that's pretty encouraging.
"We played a little sloppy at times today," Scelfo added. "But the officials did a great job informing us and it was a great learning opportunity early in camp."
The first week saw Southeastern do productive things on both sides of the ball. The Lion running game and a new-look secondary both earned praise from Scelfo.
"We're athletic on the back end defensively and that's really starting to show in certain periods," Scelfo said. "We're not seeing either side dominate. Our offense has put together some good drives, but the defense has been able to shut them down at times. As a head coach, you don't want to see one side be clearly ahead and we haven't seen that. We've had great competition.
"Moving forward in camp, we want to continue to ramp up the energy level we're playing with," Scelfo added. "We'll need to clean up the unforced errors, but we felt our overall team athleticism was evident, so we believe we're trending in the right direction."
Southeastern, which returns to the practice field Monday at 9 a.m., will open the 2026 season at home, hosting HCU at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 in Strawberry Stadium.
