Patterson, Louisiana native Tarence Calais is in his third season on the Southeastern Louisiana football coaching staff. Calais coaches the team’s secondary.
In 2019, Calais coached Ferlando Jordan, who led the Southland with five interceptions and returned a league record three picks for touchdowns on the way to being named All-America by STATS, The Associated Press and HERO Sports, as well as earning All-Louisiana honors. A pair of Calais’ charges earned All-Southland honors, as Jordan was joined by safety Xavier Lewis.
In his debut season with the Lions, Calais’ secondary was led by Lewis, who earned All-Southland Conference accolades.
Calais came to Hammond after spending the past two seasons at East Texas Baptist University. In 2017, he served as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Tigers, after opening his ETBU career as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach in 2016.
Under Calais’ watch, ETBU finished with 71 sacks and 33 tackles for loss in 2017. Linebacker Ty Parsons set a new single-season school record with 135 tackles. In 2016, he worked with All-ASC selections Sam Williams and Zac Biles. Williams would go on to sign with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Rough Riders.
His collegiate coaching career began as the defensive backs coach at UT-Permian Basin in 2015. He also previously had stops at Morgan City High School and Patterson High School.
He was a four-year letter winner and All-WAC selection as a defensive back for the Techsters. As a junior, he set the Louisiana Tech record with a 96-yard interception return for a touchdown versus San Jose State. He accumulated 171 tackles (eight for loss), two interceptions and two sacks in his time in Ruston.
Calais went on to play for the Calgary Stampede (CFL, 2012) and the Pittsburgh Power (AFL, 2013). A 2011 graduate of Louisiana Tech, he earned his degree in sociology.
Calais and his wife, Jennifer, have a son, Landen and a daughter, Aubrie.
