Former NFL wide receiver and kick returner Michael Spurlock joined the Southeastern Louisiana football staff in 2018 and serves as the program’s wide receivers coach.
In his debut season at SLU, Spurlock served as special teams coordinator in addition to working with the Lion receivers. Spurlock’s top charge was All-American all-purpose performer Juwan Petit-Frere, who earned All-Southland Conference honors as a wide receiver, kick returner and all-purpose player. Special team performers Devonte Williams (punt returner) and Jonathan Tatum (kicker) also earned All-Southland recognition.
A native of Indianola, Mississippi, Spurlock is entering his fourth season of his coaching career. His stints include stops at Philadelphia High School (2015, assistant coach), Coahoma Community College (2016, running backs coach/special teams coordinator), Dallas Cowboys (2016, special teams and defensive backs assistant) and UTSA (2017, special teams quality control/linebacker assistant/special teams quality control).
Spurlock spent 2006-14 as a receiver and kickoff/punt returner in the National Football League. Originally signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2006, Spurlock also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers, San Diego Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears.
During his time in the NFL, he became the first player in Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ history to return a kickoff for a touchdown against a New Orleans Saints team that went on to win Super Bowl XLIV.  The only player in San Diego Chargers’ history to return a punt and kickoff for a touchdown in the same season, Spurlock finished his career with 3,374 total return yards and five return touchdowns, along with 46 catches for 494 yards and three scores.
Spurlock spent his collegiate career at Ole Miss, where in 2005 he was the Rebels’ starting quarterback for eight games as a senior and represented the program at SEC Media Days. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ole Miss in 2005 and his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix in 2015.
