Joey Fitzgerald

Joey Fitzgerald is in his first season as a member of the Southeastern Louisiana football coaching staff. Fitzgerald works with the team’s wide receivers.

A 2009 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, Fitzgerald spent the 2016 season as the wide receivers coach at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

Prior to his time at UVA-Wise, the Lions’ newest coach worked with the tight ends at Eastern Kentucky during the 2015 season. Under his guidance, EKU senior tight end Ben Madon earned first team all-conference honors and was named offensive team MVP for a Colonel offense that averaged 30.3 points per contest.

Fitzgerald started his coaching career at Florida Atlantic, where he was a defensive graduate assistant for three seasons. He worked with FAU’s defensive backs in 2010 and 2011 and the team’s linebackers in 2012.

Following his time at FAU, he spent two years at Mississippi State as an offensive graduate assistant and an offensive quality control coach. The 2014 Bulldogs, with Fitzgerald on the staff, ranked among the national leaders with 513.8 total yards (8th) and 280.7 receiving yards (280.7) per game. MSU set single-season school records that season with 21 receiving touchdowns and 3,196 receiving yards.

Fitzgerald earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from HSC, where he played quarterback and helped the team to the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship. He also earned a master’s degree in education from FAU in 2012 and a master’s degree in teaching/community college education from Mississippi State in 2014.
