Anthony Scelfo

Anthony Scelfo joined the Southeastern coaching staff in June 2021. He served as the program’s pass game and recruiting coordinator, while also coaching the team’s tight ends in 2021. He switched over to wide receivers to go with his pass game and recruiting coordinator duties in 2022. Heading into the 2024 season, Scelfo was elevated to offensive coordinator and took over coaching the quarterbacks.

The 2024 offense steadily improved under Scelfo’s direction, averaging 29.0 points per game in Southland Conference play. Three of his proteges were first team All-SLC performers – running back Antonio Martin (1,228 yards rushing, 11 TD), wide receiver Darius Lewis (82 catches, 806 yards, 5 TD) and offensive tackle Brockhim Wicks.

In 2023, Scelfo’s wide receiver group was highlighted by Lewis. The All-SLC performer caught 48 passes for 568 yards and four touchdowns.

Scelfo oversaw a wide receiver group that helped the Lions to the 2022 Southland Conference championship. The 2022 SLU pass catchers were led by All-SLC selection Gage Larvadain, who finished the season with 59 catches for 731 yards.

In his first season with the Lions, Scelfo mentored a tight end corps that was led by Nolan Givan. Givan was named first team All-Southland and All-Louisiana honors, while also claiming Louisiana Newcomer of the Year honors after finishing the season with 56 catches for 572 yards and six touchdowns.

The eldest son of Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo, he came to Hammond after spending the previous three seasons as the quarterbacks coach, recruiting coordinator and pass game coordinator at Northwestern State. Under his tutelage, NSU quarterback Shelton Eppler set single-season school records for passing yards, completions, attempts and touchdowns, while also setting school career marks for passing yards and touchdowns, as well as completion percentage.

Scelfo started his coaching career as an offensive graduate assistant at UTSA, where he spent two seasons. He was a two-sport student-athlete at Tulane, playing both baseball and football for the Green Wave.

As a junior on the diamond, he was a first team All-Conference USA selection before being an eighth round selection of the Tampa Bay Rays in the MLB Draft. He spent four seasons in the Rays’ minor league system.

A 2013 Tulane graduate in political science, Scelfo and his wife Bailey, SLU’s Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations, are the parents of three sons, Giovanni, Sal and Alessi.
