Spencer Goodwin, a former Northwestern State second baseman and assistant coach, joined the Southeastern staff of coach Bobby Barbier in July of 2023. He serves as the Lions’ infield coach.
Â
In his first season, Goodwin helped mold a squad that established a program single-season record for home runs and posted its highest batting average in eight seasons. During the North Oaks Health System Southland Conference Baseball Championship, the No. 6-seeded Lions picked up a pair of wins and advanced to the semifinal round.
Â
Right-hander Brennan Stuprich, along with infielders TJ Salvaggio and Shea Thomas, earned first team All-Conference honors. Salvaggio and Thomas joined Rhett Rosevear and Jackson Rodriguez on the Southland’s All-Academic squad.
Â
Four SLU hitters produced double-figure home run totals – Salvaggio (13), Parker Coley (12), Jude Hall (12) and Thomas (10) – as the Lions blasted 86 home runs as a team, besting the previous program record by three.
Â
Hall, Coley and Justin Williams would each earn Southland Conference Hitter of the Week honors during the season, while Stuprich was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week twice.
Â
Goodwin spent six seasons in a variety of roles on Barbier’s staff at Northwestern State following his Demon playing career.
Â
He helmed the Demons’ recruiting efforts for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, serving as the staff’s recruiting coordinator while working primarily with the Demon infielders. Goodwin also played a pivotal role in directing the Bobby Barbier Baseball Camps at Northwestern State.
Â
Goodwin helped develop second baseman Daunte Stuart into a two-time All-Southland Conference selection and one of the Southland Conference’s top MLB Draft prospects.
Â
In 2020, his first season following his graduate assistantship, Goodwin helped break in the double-play combination of shortstop Cam Sibley and Stuart, both of whom were in their first seasons of Division I baseball, while working with the Northwestern State infielders.
Â
Stuart earned Freshman All-American honors in 2021, leading the Demons in batting average (.270), home runs (7) and RBIs (30).
Â
Goodwin also helped tutor the Demon hitters and was in charge of NSU’s base running. Under Goodwin’s leadership, Demon position players swiped 15 bases in just 16 games.
Â
A two-year letterman for the Demons in 2016 and 2017, Goodwin led the Demons in stolen bases (7) his senior year while finishing third on the squad in batting average (.278).
Â
In his first season at Northwestern State, Goodwin was a key part of an infield defense that set the school record for double plays in a season (71) while ranking second in the nation in total double plays turned.
Â
He made an immediate impact, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in his first collegiate start at Southern Miss on Feb. 26, 2016. Two days later, he delivered his first Division I home run.
Â
Goodwin spent two seasons at Bossier Parish Community College before transferring to Northwestern State where he played in 96 games in two seasons, starting 79 of those contests.
Â
A two-time member of the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll, Goodwin graduated in May 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Goodwin earned his master’s degree in health and human performance from NSU in May 2019.
