HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team will continue Southland Conference play against East Texas A&M and UIW.
Southeastern (5-3-1, 1-0 SLC) will travel to Commerce, Texas to face East Texas A&M (1-5-3, 0-1 SLC) Thursday at 7 p.m. before returning home to host UIW (4-4-2, 1-0 SLC) Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be found on the women's soccer schedule page at www.LionSports.net. Fans are encouraged to wear green in support of the Lions for Green Out against UIW at Strawberry Stadium.
SLU will seek to carry over its momentum into the new week after a thrilling 2-1 victory over conference rival McNeese last week. The Lions opened league action with a win over the Cowgirls in their conference home opener as Alexandra Knight and Lainey Connell connected in the net. Knight recorded the quickest goal this season at the two-minute mark to give Southeastern the early lead, though McNeese fought to recover in the second half, Connell solidified the victory for the green and gold down the stretch.
Knight claimed her sixth goal of the season as the Lions leading scorer, progressively adding to her career-high. Connell posted her first career game winning goal against McNeese along with her first goal this season. Southeastern has recorded 18 goals, 65 shots on goal on a total of 129 shots with 14 assists while currently standing at second after the opening week of conference play.
East Texas A&M fell in a 2-1 loss against UIW on the road last week to open conference play. The Lions avoided the shutout as Yiselle Bernal was able to connect in the net in the first half, but UIW stepped up to hold the visitors scoreless in the second half. Junior Allyson Reed leads East Texas A&M with two goals and one assists with 33 shots and 13 shots on goal this season. Emmy Finlinson has handled the majority of the responsibility in the net for the Lions with 32 saves and a 1.69 goals against average.
UIW gained a 2-1 victory over East Texas A&M last week in its SLC home opener to hold the top spot in conference standings. Louise Coates and Tyler Coker connected in the net for the Cardinals, earning their first goals of the season to solidify the win as both goals came through a second half surge. UIW attempted 11 shots with five shots on goal against East Texas A&M alongside five corner kicks.
The Cardinals have gained 17 goals led by freshmen Zaiba Ishaque and Morgan Heintz with three goals apiece, combining for 13 shots on goal so far this season. Fifth year Hannah Alexander has started all 10 matches for UIW this season with 42 saves and a 1.89 goals against average.
Concluding Sunday's match, SLU will return on the road to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. The Lions match against the Islanders will be streamed on ESPN+.
