Late Homer Caps UTRGV Comeback Over Lions

EDINBURG, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team fell, 8-6, to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on a late home run in Southland Conference action Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Southeastern (23-16, 12-7 SLC) led at three separate points in the game, including just two batters in.

Alex Perry led off the game with a single through the left side. Ben Robichaux drove him in with an RBI triple off the base of the wall in left-center field. Robichaux scored on Brody Capps' sacrifice fly to center.

The Lions extended their lead in the second when Brooks Wright launched a two-out, solo homer into the SLU bullpen down the left-field line. The opposite field shot was his first of two in the game and the first in his Lion career.

A leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning and another in the third helped pull the Vaqueros (17-20, 11-11 SLC) back even.

Wright put SLU back in front in the fifth, 4-3, leading off the inning with his second homer of the contest.

UTRGV took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of a pair of Lion errors to score two unearned runs.

Southeastern responded immediately, regaining the lead in the sixth. Peyton Woods was hit by a pitch to open up the frame. Consecutive one-out singles by Connor Cuff and Dane Watts loaded the bases before Blaise Priester delivered a two-run single through the left side.

The Vaqueros rallied to regain the lead in the seventh. An error on a two-out single put a runner in scoring position before an RBI single tied the game. A two-run homer by right field Hank Warren followed, putting UTRGV on top to stay.

Both decisions fell to the bullpen. Colton Vercoe (2-4) earned the win for the Vaqueros, tossing three scoreless innings in relief to close out the game. Logan Freche (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs – all earned – in 1.0 inning of work.

Justin Williams (2-for-4), Watts (2-for-4) and Wright (2-for-4) produced a pair of hits each for the Lions.
