NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team saw it's Division I-leading and SLC record 25-game winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to SFA Wednesday afternoon at Nacogdoches High School.
Ella Hill broke a 3-3 tie with a walk-off solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, as SFA (26-21, 10-11 SLC) handed SLU (39-10, 20-1 SLC) its first loss since a 9-1 defeat at Oklahoma March 1.
The Lion offense managed nine hits, but stranded eight and finished 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Colleen Kulivan and
Shenita Tucker led Southeastern with two hits each, while
Maria Detillier drove in a team-high two runs in the loss.
Hallie Burns (15-4) took the tough loss in the circle, allowing one run on three hits in five innings of relief.
SFA took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Doubles by Jamie Varga and Adelyn Becerra staked the Ladyjacks to a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Kyi'Marri Ester flared a single into left centerfield to plate Becerra and put the Ladyjacks up, 2-0. An RBI single by Malia Jones padded the lead further and allowed SFA to stretch the lead to 3-0.
After stranding a pair of runners in both the third and fourth innings, Southeastern got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly by Detillier scored Kulivan and cut the Ladyjack advantage to 3-1.
Down to its last outs, Southeastern wouldn't go away quietly and tied it up in the top of the seventh inning. RBI by Detillier and
Cydnee Schneider knotted the game at 3-3. However, Hill led off the bottom of the seventh with a shot over the centerfield fence to allow the Ladyjacks to avoid the series sweep.
Southeastern will close out its regular season road slate this weekend, heading to Thibodaux, La. for a three-game Southland set at Nicholls. The series opens with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday, concludes Saturday at noon and will be televised on ESPN+. SLU needs one win to clinch no worse than a share of the Southland regular season championship and two victories to clinch the outright league title.
