GAME ONE – SLU 12, Grambling 9
Connor Cuff's grand slam, his third home run in as many games, staked Southeastern to a 6-2 lead in the second inning, but the game was far from over.
The teams traded single runs in the third before Grambling put up a five-spot in the fifth, taking an 8-7 lead thanks to a two-run homer, two-run triple and an RBI groundout. The Tigers tacked on a run in the sixth to extend their lead.
Ben Robichaux led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, his second in as many games, pulling the Lions within a run. With one out,
Brody Capps reached on an infield single. He advanced to second on
Peyton Woods' walk and over to third on a fielder's choice off the bat of Cuff. Capps scored the tying run on a balk.
After
Justin Williams led off the seventh with a double inside the bag at third and was balked over to third, the game entered a weather delay that lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours. Once play resumed,
Blaise Priester was hit by a pitch. Robichaux followed with an RBI single to center, plating Williams and sending Priester to third. Priester scored on
Giovanni Licciardi's sacrifice bunt and Capps drove home Robichaux with a single up the middle.
Southeastern used seven pitchers in the game, with
Truitt Webb (1-0) earning the win. He struck out all three batters he faced, fanning the side in the seventh.
Nick Gisclair struck out the only batter he faced to earn his first save of the season. Grambling reliever Hampton Phillips (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run in 0.2 innings pitched.
The Lions recorded double-digit hits for the fourth consecutive game, with Capps (2-for-3), Licciardi (2-for-4), Robichaux (2-for-3) and Williams (2-for-5) all producing multiple hits.
GAME TWO – Bottom of the 8th: SLU 10, Grambling 9
The second game of the doubleheader proved to be just as wild as the first.
SLU picked up a pair of runs in the first before the Tigers bounced back with three in the top of the second, taking a 3-2 lead.
Robichaux delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the second to tie the game. An RBI single by Williams in the third put the Lions ahead, 4-3, but Grambling tied it in the fourth on a dropped sacrifice fly.
The game entered a weather delay following the fourth inning that lasted one hour and 15 minutes.
A two-run home run in the sixth temporarily put the Tigers on top, 6-4, but four Southeastern hits in the bottom of the inning allowed SLU to surge back in front by a run.
The Lions extended their lead in the seventh. Capps led off the inning with a double to center field, advancing to third and later scoring on a pair of fly outs.
Grambling bounced back to take the lead in the eighth, 9-8, with a bases-loaded double.
After
Alex Perry drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning, Priester put the Lions back in front, 10-9, with a line-drive homer to left. The two-run shot was his second of the season.
The game entered a second weather delay with the bases empty and one out in the bottom of the eighth before being suspended until Sunday morning.
