CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team extended its school-record winning streak to 14 games with a 12-2 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday evening at Chapman Field.
Friday's win in the Southland Conference series opener allowed SLU to improve to 28-9 overall and 10-0 in league action. The host Islanders fell to 10-23 overall and 4-6 in league play.
Southeastern head coach
Rick Fremin reached a career milestone with Friday's victory, earning his 700
th career victory as a collegiate head coach. In the midst of his 11
th season in Hammond, Fremin has a 376-206 mark with the Lions after previous collegiate coaching stops at Jackson State (2011-15) and Belhaven (2006-10).
After the Islanders cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, SLU scored nine runs over the final two innings to pull away.
Brilee Ford was 4-for-4 with three RBI, while
Colleen Kulivan drove in a game-high four runs on a 2-for-4 night.
Shelby Morris and
Maria Detillier added two hits apiece to help fuel the Lions' 14-hit attack.
Hallie Burns (10-3),
Tyler Oubre and
Macie LaRue combined to hold Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to two hits.
Burns and Islander starter Kendra Winfrey (7-8) matched zeroes until SLU struck first in the top of the fourth inning. A two-run single by Ford staked Southeastern to a 2-0 advantage. An RBI single by
Chloe Magee padded the Lion cushion to 3-0 in the top of the fifth.
The Islanders broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to one, but would get no closer. A Texas A&M-Corpus Christi error forced in a run in the top of the sixth inning. Later in the frame, Kulivan plated two, then scored on an RBI single by Morris.
Southeastern further broke open the game in the top of the seventh inning. Ford and
Addison Contorno singled home the frame's first two runs, then Kulivan doubled home a pair. Later in the inning, a Morris RBI single capped the scoring and provided the final margin.
The series wraps up with a noon doubleheader Saturday. Both games will be televised on ESPN+.
