HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team will return to the University Center for a two-game home stretch against HCU and UIW.
SLU (6-17, 3-11 SLC) will open its two-game homestand against HCU (8-15, 4-10 SLC) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. before hosting UIW (10-13, 5-9 SLC) for a 6 p.m. rematch Monday evening. Southeastern fell 0-2 in hard fought battles on the road against Stephen F. Austin and Lamar. SLU fell 73-54 versus Lamar in its most recent matchup as four Lions finished in double-figures led by CJ Booker with 15 points, three assists and two steals. Makhi Myles followed up with 11 points while Kyle Edison and Isaiah Gaines tied with 10 points apiece alongside nine rebounds to lead the team on the boards.
The Lions gained 11 second chance points, shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from the three-point line. Southeastern will look to regroup in week 14 of Southland Conference play led by Jerem Elyzee averaging 11.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Gaines chips in 10.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game alongside SLU's other major contributors in Myles (7.7 ppg), Peter Hemschemeier (7.6 ppg) and Jalen Forrest (7.1 ppg).
Houston Christian finished 0-2 last week, falling 73-71 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and 74-57 versus UTRGV on the road. In its last matchup, Demari Williams led the Huskies with 18 points and three rebounds against the Vaqueros. Williams shot 6-12 from the field, 1-4 from the three-point line and 5-5 from the free throw line while Ryan Bartley (12 points) and D'Aundre Samuels (10 points) also finished in double-figures.
HCU is led by Elijah Brooks with an all-around game, averaging 12.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Kylin Green is another key factor for the Huskies contributing 10.8 points, 4.8 assists and 4.0 rebounds per contest alongside Williams averaging 10.0 points per game. Houston Chrisitan ties for second in the league in rebounding defense (32.96) and ranks fourth in blocked shots (3.87) and assists (14.52). In the last matchup against Southeastern, Brooks and Trent Johnson tied with 17 points to lead the Huskies.
UIW finished 1-1 to close week 13 of conference play, gaining a 71-69 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its most recent contest. Davion Bailey dropped 36 points against the Islanders to lead all scorers with three assists and two steals, claiming his 18th game in double-digits this season. Tahj Staveskie followed up with 10 points to contribute to the win as the Cardinals shot 50.0 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from behind the arc and 70.8 percent from the free throw line.
Bailey leads the charge for Incarnate Word, averaging 18.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game this season. Staveskie (17.7 ppg) and Jordan Pyke (12.5 ppg) are also key contributors for the Cardinals as the Sandusky, Ohio native leads the team with 4.4 assists per game. Harold Woods (8.2 ppg) leads the team on the boards with 7.0 rebounds per contest. The Cardinals lead the league in three-point field goal percentage (37.8) and rank third in scoring offense (76.43).
Fans are encouraged to support the Lions against the Huskies Saturday as the team will hand out sweet Valentine's Day Candy Grams. Supporters are urged to show out for the Ballin' 4 Options Monday evening against UIW.
Concluding Monday's matchup, SLU will return on the road against Northwestern State Saturday, Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m. before facing East Texas A&M Monday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
