Southeastern Opens Brown/Short Memorial Collegiate Classic with 2-0 Day

SLU (11-3) extends win streak to seven with victories over St. Louis and Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team opened play at the Michelle Short and Adam Brown Memorial Collegiate Classic with a pair of victories Friday afternoon at Farris Field at Natalie Shock Stadium.

Southeastern (11-3) extended its winning streak to seven games with wins over St. Louis (6-5) and host Central Arkansas (6-5).

The Lady Lions opened the day with a 5-2 win over St. Louis. Shelby Morris led SLU at the plate with a 2-for-4 showing and three runs scored. Ka'Lyn Watson, Maria Detillier and Brilee Ford each drove in runs for Southeastern.

Hallie Burns (4-0) scattered four hits and struck out a career-high nine batters in five innings of work to remain undefeated in the circle. Macie LaRue held the Billikens scoreless over the final two innings to earn her first career save at SLU.

Southeastern closed the day with a 6-0 shutout of the host Bears. Cera Blanchard (4-0) retired the first 13 batters she faced, struck out five and scattered three hits in the complete-game shutout effort.

SLU got all the offense it needed in the top of the first inning, as a Cydnee Schneider RBI single followed up by a three-run home run by Ka'Lyn Watson keyed a four-run frame. Morris and Chloe Magee drove in runs in the fourth to provide the final margin, which was more than enough for Blanchard.

Southeastern will be back in action Saturday, closing out the tournament with a 10 a.m. game versus Evansville and a 12:30 p.m. contest versus St. Louis. Live stats for both games, provide by tournament host UCA, will be accessible at www.ucasports.com/sideearmstats/softball.
