HAMMOND, La. – The Kent State bats remained hot, powering the Golden Flashes to an 11-2 non-conference win Saturday over the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Kent State (2-0) rapped out 16 hits, including three home runs, spoiling a masterful relief performance from Southeastern's
Luke Lirette.
The senior right-hander from Houma, Louisiana struck out six and allowed just one run over four innings of long relief, holding the Golden Flashes at bay. Down 6-1 when Lirette entered the game, Southeastern (0-2) scratched across a run in the fifth, but that was all they could muster.
Alex Perry ripped a two-double in the second inning, scoring on
Peyton Woods' RBI single to right field for the Lions' first run of the game.
Catcher
Blaise Priester's one-out single in the fifth led to Southeastern's other run, scoring from second on
Justin Williams' RBI double down the left-field line.
The Golden Flashes runs came in bunches. A bases-clearing triple in the second put them up, 3-0, while a pair of doubles and a groundout led to three more runs in the third. A solo home run in the seventh and two more homers in the ninth sealed the victory.
Kent State starting pitcher Easton Tumis (1-0) earned the win, allowing both runs on five hits in 5.1 innings pitched. He struck out three. Left-hander Nick Guidas logged the final 3.2 innings in relief to earn his first save of the season.
Lakin Polk (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs – all earned – in 3.0 innings of work.
