HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer student-athlete Isabella Walls was named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday morning, after an announcement from the conference office.
Walls is the third Lion to earn the weekly award this season, joining freshman Alexandra Knight (Aug. 18) and junior Lainey Connell (Aug. 25). The conference weekly honor is the first of the senior's career as she has remained the defensive anchor for SLU this season.
The Geneva, Ill. native strengthened Southeastern's back line defense and helped the green and gold in its 1-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin on the road. Walls played a crucial role as the center back for the Lions, aiding in their second consecutive shutout in conference play. The first-year captain delivered the game winning assist to Knight off a perfectly timed set piece in the 17th minute of the match.
Walls recorded her third assist of the season as she played all 90 minutes in the match, leading the team in minutes played (1,336). The senior also stepped up and blocked multiple shots throughout the match, limiting Stephen F. Austin to only three shots on goal in the contest. As a veteran, Walls has helped Southeastern claim three shutouts this season along with being recognized amongst the top defensive teams in the league.
SLU will look to extend its two-match winning streak with momentum in the latter half of conference play, hosting Northwestern State Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. and Lamar Sunday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
