SLU Set to Face SFA and Lamar on the Road

Southeastern prepares to travel for a two-game road stretch against Stephen F. Austin and Lamar

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team will suit up on the road in a rematch against Stephen F. Austin and Lamar.

Southeastern (6-15, 3-9 SLC) will begin Week 13 of Southland Conference play in Nacogdoches, Texas against Stephen F. Austin Saturday at 5 p.m. SLU will visit Lamar Monday at 6 p.m. to close out the week as both matchups will be streamed on ESPN+. Live stats, provided by the hosts, can be accessed on the men's basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net. The game can also be heard on KSLU 90.9 The Lion, online at either www.LionSports.net/listenlive or www.LionUpRadio.org, via the following apps – Lions Gameday Experience, Live365, iHeart, Audacy, TuneIn and MyTuner Radio - or on Alexa speakers (skill must be enabled first). The Lions ended the week 1-1 after a big 67-61 home win over Nicholls before falling 76-66 against McNeese at home. In their most recent matchup, three Lions finished in double-figures led by Makhi Myles with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals against the Cowboys. Jeremy Elyzee recorded 12 points, shooting 3-4 from the field, 2-2 from behind the arc and 4-5 from the free throw line while Isaiah Gaines posted 10 points and five rebounds

Ethan Pickett and Jaiden Lawrence chipped in eight points apiece as SLU fought to stay within reach against McNeese, but fell down the stretch. Southeastern will seek to bounce back on the road led by Elyzee with 11.1 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game. Gaines follows up with 11.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest to lead the team on the boards. The Lions also heavily rely on its other major contributors in Peter Hemschemeier (7.8 ppg), Makhi Myles (8.5 ppg) and Jalen Forrest (7.1 ppg).

Stephen F. Austin compounded its six-game winning streak with a hard-fought 69-67 victory over Northwestern State on the road. Reigning SLC Player of the Week Keon Thompson dropped 27 points with six rebounds, shooting 11-17 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line. Lateef Patrick followed up with 13 points and five rebounds to hold on down the stretch to secure the win.

The Lumberjacks are led by Thompson averaging 17.8 points per game, 5.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while claiming 19 games in double-figures. Thompson has led Stephen F. Austin shooting 50.7 percent from the field and 32.0 percent from the three-point line. Lateef Patrick (15.8 ppg) and Narit Chotikanavic (10.7 ppg) are other major contributors for the Lumberjacks this season alongside Kam Burton (6.9 ppg). 

Lamar closed out the past week 1-1 with an 88-81 loss against SFA before gaining a 82-61 victory over East Texas A&M at home. The Cardinals recorded 36 paint points and 15 points off turnovers against the Lions led by Ron Lee Jr. with 28 points and seven rebounds. Braden East and King-Njhsanni Wilhite claimed 12 points apiece against East Texas A&M to contribute to the win.

Lee Jr. leads the charge for Lamar, averaging 16.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. The junior has recorded 16 games in double-figures as Andrew Holifield follows up with 14.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest. Braden East contributes 11.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game alongside Cody Pennebaker with 7.2 points, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game. 

Concluding Monday's matchup, the Lions will return for a two-game homestand against HCU Saturday, Feb. 7 at 3:30 p.m. before UIW visits Hammond, America Monday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
