Box Score MURRAY, Ky. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team earned a 45-24 nonconference road victory over Murray State Saturday night in Roy Stewart Stadium.
Southeastern (1-1) outscored the Racers, 21-3, in the second quarter to break open the game and never looked back. The Lions held a 28-10 advantage at halftime and Murray State (0-2) could never get closer than 14 in the final half.
"I'm really proud of the way we fought tonight," Southeastern head coach
Frank Scelfo said. "We still have to clean up the turnovers, but we were able to limit our penalties which was a big emphasis this week for us and a huge factor in our success tonight."
With
Carson Camp (18-for-25, 173 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) and
Kyle Lowe (6-for-8, 45 yards, 0 TD) splitting time under center, SLU racked up 480 total yards and 31 first downs in the win. Lowe led Southeastern with 13 carries for 97 yards and three touchdowns, as the Lions finished with 262 yards on the ground.
Defensively,
KK Reno led SLU with eight tackles.
Khamron Ford and
Shakespeare Louis each intercepted passes for Southeastern, while
Peyton Anderson forced a fumble that
Khalid Moore returned for a touchdown.
Murray State quarterback Jim Ogle threw for 254 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions on the night, while Jawaun Washington led the Racers with 19 carries for 59 yards and a score.
SLU jumped out to an early lead with a 12-play, 68-yard scoring drive on the opening possession. Camp found
Cade Collier from four yards out to give the Lions a 7-0 lead with 9:56 left in the opening quarter.
After a Murray State three-and-out, Southeastern looked poised to pad its lead. However, Murray's Bryan Pulley intercepted a Camp pass in the end zone to end the threat. The Racers answered with a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive, as Jordan Washington raced in from 21 yards out to tie the score at 7-7 with 3:31 left in the first quarter.
On the ensuing possession, the Lions were on the march again. Lowe led a nine-play, 76-yard drive that took the game into the second quarter.
Rodeo Graham Jr. put SLU back on top with a 12-yard scoring run to give SLU a 14-7 lead less than a minute into the second quarter.
Murray State answered right back, driving into the Southeastern red zone. The Lion defense stiffened, however, and the Racers had to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Jack Tannehill to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 10:26 left in the opening half.
Lowe led the Lions on a 11-play, 79-yard drive to increase the Southeastern advantage. He finished the drive himself, racing in from 26 yards out to put SLU up, 21-10, with 5:26 left in the second quarter.
On the next play from scrimmage, Anderson stripped Washington. Moore picked up the loose ball and cruised in from 18 yards out to put SLU up, 28-10, with 5:10 left in the first half.
After a Murray State punt, SLU was driving again late in the half, but Camp was stripped near midfield by Michael Tilmon and Murray's Conlee Crossno pounced on the loose ball. The Southeastern defense held, however, as a break up by
Zach Johnson forced the Racers to turn the ball over on downs.
A 19-yard Camp strike to
Lonnie Shinn into Murray State territory set up a 53-yard field goal try by
Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez, but the long try fell just short to keep the deficit at 28-10 heading into the break.
Southeastern forced a Murray State punt on the opening drive of the third quarter and
Kentrell Prejean returned the punt 35 yards to set SLU up near midfield. SLU went three-and-out and was forced to punt for the first time in the game.
The Racers went three-and-out on their next drive and the Lions added to their lead. Garcia Rodriguez capped a nine-play, 53-yard drive with a 21-yard field goal to extend the SLU advantage to 31-10 with 4:27 left in the third quarter.
Murray cut the lead to 31-17 early in the fourth quarter on a 37-yard pass from Ogle to Cam Bulluck. After a SLU punt, Ford intercepted Ogle and returned the pick 52 yards down to the Murray State nine-yard line. Two plays later, Lowe scored from five yards out to give Southeastern a 38-17 advantage with 10:20 remaining.
Murray State cut the lead back to 14 on the ensuing drive. Northington plunged in from a yard out to pull the Racers within, 38-24, with 8:49 remaining. A SLU punt gave Murray the ball back with just under five minutes left, but a diving interception by Louis ended the Racer threat with just under four minutes remaining.
Lowe iced the game in the final minute with a 26-yard touchdown run to provide the final 45-24 margin.
