HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team wrapped up its second week of fall practice Saturday morning in Strawberry Stadium.
Southeastern head coach
Frank Scelfo has been pleased with the strides his team has made over the past week.
"We're making fewer mistakes," Scelfo commented. "We had a great transition from our summer workouts into our first week of camp. While we're making fewer mistakes, we can start see the daily grind of camp wearing on our team a little bit. It's just something we've got to fight through, more from a mental standpoint."
Scelfo has also been happy with the competition on both sides of the ball, as there's been good give-and-take between the offense and defense during scrimmage situations.
"We've seen guys making big plays on either side of the ball," Scelfo said. "The defense got frustrated early in the week, because the offense had a good day, but the defensive guys have bounced right back. It's been pretty even through these first two weeks."
On the offensive side, both new quarterbacks –
Carson Camp and
Kyle Lowe – have impressed Scelfo in the early part of camp.
"Both of those guys have been unselfish and are taking advantage of the reps they're given in practice," Scelfo commented. "We're going to plays the guys that give us the best opportunity to win. At quarterback, that means taking care of the football and directing the offense the right way and both of those guys have done a great job in both areas thus far."
The depth on the defense has impressed Scelfo through the start of fall camp.
"We're returning All-Southland Conference players at every level of our defense (defensive lineman
Kaleb Proctor, linebacker
KK Reno, defensive back
Ian Conerly-Goodly and defensive back
Khamron Ford)," Scelfo said. "So that's a big plus. Our depth is the result of the veteran guys who've been loyal to our program and not jumping in the portal."
The first two weeks have confirmed Scelfo's positive outlook for the upcoming season.
"We've seen growth," Scelfo said. "Guys are working hard on the field and in the weight room. Everything's conducive for us to have a successful 2025."
Southeastern opens its third week of fall practice with a 9 a.m. practice Monday in Strawberry Stadium. SLU opens the 2025 campaign Aug. 30 with a 6:30 p.m. contest at Louisiana Tech. The Lions open their five-game home schedule Sept. 13, hosting Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
