Lady Lions Fall 3-1 on the Road

SLU suffers 3-1 loss to South Alabama to close out the first of its three match road stretch

MOBILE, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to South Alabama on the road Sunday evening in the Cage.

Southeastern (0-4) dropped its fourth consecutive match of the season against South Alabama (4-1) as the Jaguars gained all the momentum in the second half of the match to secure the win. Lady Lion goalkeeper Kendall Curran ended with 10 saves to complete a busy night in the net. Curran played all 90 minutes of the match and recorded her second match of the season with double digit saves.

South Alabama came out the gate firing in the opening minutes of the match to begin the first half aggressive with the home field advantage. Southeastern battled to match the Jaguars intensity as the hosts controlled the possession early. SLU continued to battle with multiple counter attacks as its backline defense showcased its toughness to deny South Alabama's opportunities. Jaguar goalkeeper Rhyan Connolly made her debut playing 67 minutes of the match before switched in the net by Jaidin Kinch, who finished the night with two saves in 22 minutes.

The Lady Lions fought to capitalize on the Jaguars' mistakes and form a series of attacks. South Alabama continued to work to find an opening, but SLU's defense stepped up big early in the first half to set the tone. Defensively, Southeastern limited opportunities for the hosts and caused the Jaguars to play out of sorts on their home field. Both teams persisted, looking to gain the first goal of the match.

SLU's defense stood firm late in the first half to keep South Alabama off the board as both teams entered halftime scoreless. The Jaguars closed the first half with six shots and four corner kicks as the Lady Lions recorded four saves and one corner kick opportunity.

Southeastern returned from halftime with a burst of energy in the opening minutes of the second half. SLU continued to work and take advantage of South Alabama's mistakes to push attacks from the edges. The Jaguars battled to fuel a run with close shots around the net early in the second half, but Curran locked down the net to deny the hosts' momentum. The Lady Lions carried over their defensive effort from the first half, but South Alabama broke free to be the first on the board in the 56th minute of the match.

Mae Hunt recorded the first goal of the match off an assist by Victoria Rocci as the Jaguars gained a 1-0 lead. South Alabama turned up its pressure midway in the second half to take control of the match. The Jaguars extended their lead 2-0 in the 75th minute of the match as Juliana Lopes connected in the net for her first goal of the season. South Alabama kept its foot on the gas as Andrea Iljkic connected on the bottom center of the net in the 81st minute of the match to widen the lead, 3-0.

Southeastern caught a break late in the second half as it was credited with an own goal in the 83rd minute of the contest to post its second goal of the season. The Jaguars quickly worked to eliminate SLU's momentum late in the second half. The Lady Lions remained determined to cut into the deficit after a red card issued in the 83rd minute, but would get no closer.

Southeastern closed out the match with 10 saves, three shots and three corner kicks. South Alabama finished with 21 shots and eight corner kicks to close out the night.
