Southeastern Wraps First Week of Fall Practice

SLU returns to practice field Monday at 9 a.m.

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team wrapped up its opening week of fall practice Saturday morning in Strawberry Stadium.

The Lions came together as a full team for the first time Saturday. SLU head coach Frank Scelfo has been pleased with his squad's performance through the first five official practices.

"The most encouraging thing has been the way the experience and leadership of our veteran guys has shown through," Scelfo commented. "The preparation of what we did in the spring and summer has really carried over to fall camp."

As it has since Scelfo took over the program prior to the 2018 season, Southeastern opened fall practice with four split-squad practices.

"By splitting up the team for the first four practices, we're able to give everyone more reps," Scelfo said. "We saw some growth during those practices, especially with our new guys."

Saturday was also the first time the Lions put on full pads for the week. With referees at practice, Southeastern had several segments of practice feature game-type situations.

"We were physical today, but we committed too many penalties," Scelfo stated. "We had a lot of pre-snap penalties, which are correctible mistakes. You expect that early on, but we'll get that cleaned up.

"The other thing we have to do better is creating turnovers on defense," Scelfo concluded. "While we don't want to see our offense turning it over, but we need our defense to be more opportunistic moving forward."

Southeastern opens its second week of fall practice with a 9 a.m. practice Monday in Strawberry Stadium. SLU opens the 2025 campaign Aug. 30 with a 6:30 p.m. contest at Louisiana Tech. The Lions open their five-game home schedule Sept. 13, hosting Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
