HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University baseball alum Drew Avans was called up Tuesday to the Major League roster by the Athletics.
Avans was enjoying a career-high slash line at AAA Las Vegas (.328/.414/.444) with eight doubles, one triple and four home runs. The left-handed hitting outfielder has scored 41 runs and driven in another 34 during his 48 games played.
He becomes the 12
th player in program history to reach the MLB level, joining Jim Carlin (1941), Carl Schutz (1996), Kevin Morgan (1997), Kirk Bullinger (1998-2004), Jeff Williams (1999-2002), Wade Miley (2011-), Steve Clevenger (2011-16), Tanner Rainey (2018-), Kyle Keller (2019-21), Mac Sceroler (2021) and Will Warren (2024-).
The former 33rd-round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers signed a free-agent contract with the Athletics organization during the offseason.
Avans lettered at Southeastern from 2015-18, finishing with a .308 career batting average to go along with 33 doubles, six triples and 17 home runs. He scored 129 runs and drove in another 96 during his four seasons as a Lion. Avans ranks fifth on the SLU career charts for both walks (109) and stolen bases (64).
The native of Alabaster, Alabama was a two-time All-Conference selection and a two-time member of the Southland All-Academic squad.
