BEAUMONT, Texas – Maria Detillier's game-winning solo home run capped a three-run seventh inning that allowed the reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team to claim a 3-2 victory in the rubber game of its league series with Lamar Wednesday afternoon at the LU Softball Complex.
Southeastern (34-11, 14-4 SLC) maintained its share of the Southland lead by taking the series over the host Cardinals (22-19, 10-8 SLC).
Detillier's late-inning home run capped a 3-for-4 day for the Lady Lion junior that saw her finish a triple shy of the cycle.
Shenita Tucker added the other two hits for SLU. The trio of
Britney Lewinski,
Hallie Burns and
Macie LaRue (14-1) combined to host LU to four hits in Wednesday's win.
SLU stranded six runners through the first four innings, but it was Lamar who broke through first in the bottom of the fourth after Lewinski had cruised through the first three innings. A wild pitch scored the frame's first run, then Trinity Brandon singled home another to chase Lewinski from the game. Burns came in and kept the deficit at 2-0 heading to the fifth.
Southeastern left two more on base in the top of the sixth, but finally got to LU reliever Mallory Pitre (6-3) in the seventh inning. Tucker started things with a triple to the right centerfield gap.
Shelby Morris then lifted a high pop up behind the third base bag that Sicily Windham dropped, allowing Tucker to score. Following the error, Morris raced all the way to third to put the tying run in scoring position.
Chloe Magee followed with a fly ball to left that was deep enough to score Morris with the tying run.
That set up Detillier's heroics, as the Gramercy, Louisiana native belted her team-high fourth home run of the season well over the left field fence to give SLU the lead. The go-ahead blast was the latest in a remarkable season for Detillier, who leads the Southland with 45 RBI.
Lamar put the tying run on base with a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh. LaRue recovered by striking out Gracee Hess and then forcing Jayne Sepulveda to fly out to close out the dramatic victory.
Southeastern will return home to host Stephen F. Austin for a three-game series at North Oak Park. The series will open with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday and concludes with a noon contest Saturday. The three-game set with the Ladyjacks will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard online at
