HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team celebrated Senior Day with a 4-0 shutout victory over Stephen F. Austin to complete a three-game Southland Conference series sweep Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.
Prior to the game, Southeastern honored the senior class of
Feline Poot,
Britney Lewinski,
Ariel Gomez,
Maddie Leal,
Leah Marshall,
Allison Brunson,
Brilee Broussard and
Maddie Watson. SLU (37-11, 17-4 SLC) had plenty to celebrate after winning its fifth straight game and completing a sweep of a Lumberjack team (23-22, 12-9 SLC) that came into the series on a seven-game winning streak and two games out of the league lead.
Lewinski (7-4) threw six scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing just four hits. In just her second outing of the season, Brunson tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the team's league-high 14
th shutout of the season.
Maria Detillier,
Shelby Morris and
Kailey Dixon each had two hits and RBI to lead the Lady Lions at the plate.
Southeastern took the lead versus SFA starter Reagan Hill (6-6) in the bottom of the second inning.
Brilee Ford led off the inning with a double and was replaced on the base paths by Broussard. One out later, Broussard raced home on a passed ball to put SLU on the board. Later in the frame, Dixon singled home
Colleen Kulivan to give the Lady Lions a 2-0 lead.
Southeastern added to its advantage in the bottom of the third inning. Morris led off the frame with an infield single, was bunted to second by
Chloe Magee and scored on an RBI single by Detillier to put SLU up, 3-0.
The Lady Lions closed out their scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kulivan drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Dixon hit and scored on an RBI single by Morris to give Southeastern a 4-0 cushion.
SFA mounted its biggest scoring threat in the top of the fifth inning. Walks to Kaylee Paul and Hope Lusk put a pair of runners on with two outs. Ellie Vance followed with a sharp single up the middle, but
Shenita Tucker gunned down Paul trying to score to keep the Lumberjacks off the board. From there, Lewinski and Brunson retired Stephen F. Austin in order over the final two innings to help SLU maintain its share of the Southland Conference lead.
The Lady Lions will close out its regular season road schedule next week with a three-game series at UIW that can be seen on ESPN+. The series opens with a 3 p.m. contest Thursday and concludes with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader Friday.
